Iskar and Isandra were seated on luxuriously soft cushions in the temple’s antechamber when they had been interrupted. Thick clouds of incense polluted the air, but Billy didn’t mind it. He’d grown accustomed to the smell—it even had a calming effect on him because Isandra often returned home at the end of each day with the scent on her. Iskar and Isandra were staring at him, concern worn openly on their faces at his rushing in, pushing past the acolytes.

“Guys! I met Ko’ra!” he blurted out.

Iskar literally dropped what he was doing—assembling a prayer bead necklace made of gems brought in by local traders, donated to the temple in a show of respect meant to harbor goodwill with Iskar and allow the merchants to operate within Turik’s already crowded marketplace. He had been discussing the matter with Isandra, weighing the risks and potential benefits of inviting yet another group of traders—jewelers in this case—into town.

All that was instantly forgotten when Billy walked through the door and blurted out those four words.

“You met Ko’ra?” Isandra gasped, straightening in shock. “What happened?!”

“So, so much,” Billy said. “Uhh, I killed a big-ass monster, and then Ko’ra showed up, and she said we should be allies, so we made out, and she was like ‘Bam! We’re getting married,’ and—”

“Whoa, slow down. You’re betrothed to Ko’ra? The goddess of the moon?” Iskar asked incredulously.

“That’s what she told me, yeah,” Billy assured him, but Iskar was having a hard time accepting the story. The tale was as incredible as it was poorly told.

“You’re certain she said you’re betrothed?” Isandra asked. “I don’t understand. This is so… abrupt.” Her cheeks flushed, and she looked as though she might faint.

“I almost feel like I was kind of tricked into it, to be honest,” Billy said.

“Then we must call it off,” the high priestess said with a determination that startled Billy.

Billy sat beside her and held her by the shoulders. “Relax,” he said. “I think it might work out. She talked a lot about us being allies and forming a ‘union.’ I didn’t understand exactly what she was talking about until we kissed.”

Isandra’s already flushed face burned with anger as he mentioned the kiss. Iskar looked similarly flustered, though not for the same reasons. Billy pressed on with the story nonetheless, though more cautiously than before. “Anyway, once that was done, the earth shook, and the wind picked up in a big way. It felt like a huge deal. I don’t think I can back down. But if we do marry, she seems like a really powerful ally, and allies aren’t bad to have.”

Iskar shook his head. “As far as friends go, you can’t beat a goddess.”

“This is just so soon,” she said. “I—I thought maybe you might choose one of us for your queen,” she confessed, looking away, embarrassed by the vulnerable admission.

Billy frowned to see her so wounded. “I understand,” he said, dropping to his knees in front of her. “I planned that, too, but there are things in motion now which cannot be undone.
